From 31 July to 2 August 2026, on the occasion of the inaugural edition of Livorno Art Book Fair, the Museo della Città di Livorno presents the exhibition “UNO STRANO MOVIMENTO. Tano D’Amico e l'editoria del '77.” Nearly fifty years after the Movement of 1977, the exhibition traces the complexity of a pivotal period in Italian culture through a dialogue between Tano D’Amico’s photographs and a selection of original materials from the time, including books, newspapers, magazines, leaflets and other printed matter.

Rather than offering a historical reconstruction, the exhibition approaches 1977 as a moment of profound editorial, graphic and cultural transformation, marked by extraordinary creative vitality. Amid the tensions between conflict and experimentation, violence and the desire for change, print, graphic design and publishing became instruments through which a new world could be imagined and constructed. It was within this laboratory of languages, forms and practices that many of the cultural experiences destined to develop over the following decades first took root.

As the photographer himself recalls, his generation will be remembered “for having accompanied to the threshold of history those who had never before entered it,” transforming photography into an instrument of memory and testimony.

Alongside the photographs, the curatorial narrative reconstructs the publishing landscape that accompanied this period: from the pages of Lotta Continua and issues of Ombre Rosse to materials produced by A/traverso and Radio Alice, as well as feminist publications, printed matter associated with the Metropolitan Indians and the first editions of Tano D’Amico’s books.

Among the works on display is È il ’77, the photographic book published by Tano D’Amico in 1978 and a central testimony to that historical moment. It is presented alongside Lettere agli eretici, the celebrated publishing hoax conceived by Pierfranco Ghisleni and attributed to Enrico Berlinguer: an emblematic work demonstrating the capacity of 1977 to transform publishing into a critical language and a political gesture.

The archival exhibition enters into dialogue with the new editorial research presented by the exhibitors of Livorno Art Book Fair, an event dedicated to art books, independent publishing and contemporary editorial practices. Through its public programme, the fair invites audiences to reflect on the book as a space for research, experimentation and the construction of critical thought.

The exhibition will be open from 31 July to 2 August 2026 at the Museo della Città di Livorno, as part of Livorno Art Book Fair and during the programme of Effetto Venezia.

The programme will also include the talk “1977: A Conversation with Tano D’Amico,” taking place on Saturday 1 August at 9.30 pm. The event will offer an opportunity to explore this historical period through the first-hand account of one of its most significant witnesses.
